Independent Dependence

Whenever he was asleep, or at work, when he was absent for a certain amount of time, I’d sneak out of us and read Jack Gilbert.

I’d take a hot bath and sing a bad pop song that I secretly love.

I’d recite Auden’s “Funeral Blues” out loud from memory, each time a little better, and let it inflate my heart.

I’d watch artsy films and enjoy my pretentiousness. I’d turn my cultural superiority complex on for a few hours.

I’d make some coffee and drink it while I stand in front of the bathroom mirror, imagining haircuts.

I’d sign up for free classes on poetry, on literature, on composition. On Greek mythology if I had more time.

I’d sit on the kitchen counter and eat half of a frozen pizza I had baked, while reading how to cook that fettuccine Alfredo I’ll never make. I’d let my legs dangle.

I’d take a short walk at dusk and let the March air that doesn’t feel like the usual March air cool me off. I’d take my time if it starts to rain.

And when he wakes up, or comes home, or notices my slight absence, I’d smile and sneak back inside of us, and read to him Jack Gilbert.

Q&A

capturedphotos replied to Q&A: Some people ask the most random questions. Hahaha

That they do!!

analogu-e asked: Thank you for your wonderful themes. <3 You’re amazing! xoxo

Aww, thanks! Glad you like them! You’re very welcome. :)

Anonymous asked: hi mags! i’m the anon who asked about the sidebar image url. i followed the instructions but it doesn’t work :(

Really sorry for the tardiness of this reply, but make sure that the URL of the file you’re trying to paste into the textbox has a .JPG, .PNG, or .GIF extension. If that’s not the problem, then I’m afraid you’d have to try to reinstall. Or you can ask off-Anon and I’ll go over your blog and try to see where the problem is.

Anonymous asked: where did you get your background?

It’s one of my photos that I blurred out in Photoshop.

msindigoskye asked: Hi. How could I detach the circle thingy in the dp part in your theme? I’m actually using one of yours. I wanted to make it the usual type of default photos seen on blogs and hoping you could help me through this. Thankyou! :)

Find this in the codes and erase it:

<img align=”right” src=”http://static.tumblr.com/ls5fqgx/hFum6pvpv/3.png” class=”frame”>

Anonymous asked: what’s the different between polaroid and instax?

Just the format of the photos, really. Polaroid and Fujifilm are also separate companies (unless there’s some brand-buying I didn’t know about). But apart from that, there’s not much else.

Anonymous asked: “This isn’t a reunion because we never broke up. ….” - Pete Wentz FOB is coming back to Manila! hihi

Fuck yeaaah! Way to go, Manila! Some countries didn’t get to score a spot on the tour, so I’m quite happy for the Philippines!! I’ll be seeing them in June so I’m not missing out! \m/

Anonymous asked: hi mags! i’m thinking to buy la sardina. can you suggest what kind of la sardina i should buy? how’s your experience with it? thanks :)

I thought La Sardinas only have different styles, not functionality. It’s quite good! I like its results better than the Olympus XA2’s, and it’s really light and toy-like, making it super easy to use. A good film P&S to start with, in my opinion. Good luck!

Anonymous asked: Do you always edit your photos before posting it or you just got the talent? I’m really jealous on you coz your photos are too awesome and wonderful. :<

I edit them, though just colors and the like using LR presets. Aww, thank you!

Anonymous asked: how do i change the width of the header in your cassadaga theme?

It’s not big enough? This part:

#header {
    border-bottom: 1px solid #EEEEEE;
    margin-top: 0;
    height: 100%;
    width: 741px; }

under “width.”

Anonymous asked: MAGS HI. HOW DO I CHANGE THE FONT OF THE TITLE & BODY TEXT ON YOUR SEA PRIDE THEME? IM NOT SHOUTING.HEHE MY KEYBOARD’S BROKEN. SORRY FOR SCREAMING IN YOUR HEAD.

Haha! Find this:

body {
background-color: #FBFBFB;
background-image: url(‘{image:Background}’);
background-position: bottom center;
background-attachment: fixed;
background-size: cover;
font-family: ‘Karla’, sans-serif;
font-size: 12.5px;
color: #666666;
height: 100%;
margin: 0 auto; }

see under “font-family” (in bold). Change the underlined part.

erlihepburn asked: how do i add pages in spin madly on theme? :)

Create them and they will add itself inside the “Info” box. Make sure to check the box labeled “Show a link to this page.” To place the page links right in the navigation bar (next to the home, ask, etc), go to these solutions: 1 and 2 (the second one’s for a bug the first one had, but you need to follow both).

Anonymous asked: hi ate mags. i’m thinking to buy an analog camera but the problem is i’m a bit confused on how to move the photos to my laptop without print then scan them? sorry for stupid question

It’s not a stupid question! :) I usually send it to a lab—pharmacies in the US usually have film developing services and they offer it cheaper than pro photo labs. In other countries, I’m sure you have photo labs in the mall or downtown. Then ask them to develop the film, no prints, but ask them to scan the negatives and put the scans inside a CD (or provide them with a flash drive). The CD costs extra but at least you don’t need to print them out and have to scan them yourself. If you do want to scan them yourself, there are lots of tutorials on Google without having to use a film scanner. Good luck! :)

Anonymous asked: Do you like post-rock music? Sigur Rós & Explosion in the sky & Lights out asia(bands). :)

No, not really, though I’ve never heard of a song by any of them except one of Sigur Rós’. If the beat is good and catchy I usually like it; I don’t rule out by genre. :) You’re welcome to suggest some songs! I love listening to new music. :)

paper-fortunes asked: your photos are too amazing for my life. what i really love about them is that i actually feel like i’ve been there. you’re such a lucky girl, and you seem incredibly nice! *hug*. :)

Aww, you are too kind! Even more so when your photos are phenomenal!! Thank you, it means a lot. :) *hug back*

Anonymous asked: Hi Ate Mags! I’m using your Sea Pride theme. It’s soo prettty! Please help me hide/remove the notes and tags at the bottom of each post?

Hey! Yeah, just erase this part in the codes:

{block:HasTags} / {block:Tags}#<a title=”” href=”{TagURL}” class=”tag”>{Tag}</a> {/block:Tags}{/block:HasTags}

ncarivero asked: Super nice photos Mags! :)

Thank you, Nica!! :)

Anonymous asked: Hey there Mags! Where can I learn how to make a link like the “Info” link in your Spin Madly On theme? Thank you! :)

Hi! I actually just learned it from trial and error using jQuery codes I Googled. To be honest, jQuery tutorials online are quite confusing to the unfamiliar eyes; it took me a long time before I realized that they’re all expecting me to learn where this and that goes. If it helps, that kind of effect is called “SlickBox.”

Anonymous asked: please upload a picture of you and your boyf!<3

Once we see each other, that’s probably all you’d see in here. Haha!

amielaaa replied to Sigh: THIS IS JUST TOO CUTE

Hahaha, thanks!!

teddybear-hugs replied to Sigh: it makes me smile to see that you both are so happy together and i feel honored that you would share it with us followers :)

Aww, I’m glad you appreciated that! :)

digitalraindrops asked: Hi Ate Mags! I’m currently using your Sea Pride theme and kinda tweaked it a little bit, if that’s okay with you. :) Anywho, your blog is amazinggg! :DD

That’s totally fine! Thanks for letting me know! :)

Anonymous asked: Is your boyfriend filipino??

Yes, sir/ma’am!

April 2013.

Sigh. You keep making me want to do things I never thought I’d do.

You make me want to voice things out, express, stop keeping it all inside a bottle. This is supposed to be a private moment but then I realized that I don’t care. Besides, I rarely have the opportunity to showcase how proud I am to have you, so this is my moment to do that. I don’t care who gets to read.

You make me want to keep looking for better words that will suit in describing this. Lately I’ve been reading new vocabularies. The English language, I found, doesn’t seem to be adequately equipped in describing what we have. When I find it, I’ll let you know.

You make me want to go around the streets, shake strangers by the shoulders, and yell at them, “Hey, you know that big hoopla they sell about soul mates? It’s real. And the mythical-sounding ‘true love’ you read from Austen novels and hear from love songs? That’s real, too.” Nobody might believe, but I’m willing to try.

You make me want to disbelieve time. I don’t know; what is time anyway? This first month felt like a whole fucking year, a day seemed like three dates, and Skype conversations last until four in the morning (so far). We don’t usually make a big deal out of month-saries, but how could you not when this one felt like a year compressed inside thirty days?

You make me want to get out of bed in the morning. It used to be such a chore, but now I could not imagine the kind of life I had before you. I could only remember it being a pretty big black hole where I survived with Internet dependency and a zoned-out look on my face. So yes, I guess thanks is in order. Thank you for being here.

Lastly, you make me want to write extremely cheesy and lovesick-ly essays and post them publicly. People might unfollow but, again, I just don’t give a flying fuck. Here’s to the first of many. I love you.

Love,
Mags
