Whenever he was asleep, or at work, when he was absent for a certain amount of time, I’d sneak out of us and read Jack Gilbert.

I’d take a hot bath and sing a bad pop song that I secretly love.

I’d recite Auden’s “Funeral Blues” out loud from memory, each time a little better, and let it inflate my heart.

I’d watch artsy films and enjoy my pretentiousness. I’d turn my cultural superiority complex on for a few hours.

I’d make some coffee and drink it while I stand in front of the bathroom mirror, imagining haircuts.

I’d sign up for free classes on poetry, on literature, on composition. On Greek mythology if I had more time.

I’d sit on the kitchen counter and eat half of a frozen pizza I had baked, while reading how to cook that fettuccine Alfredo I’ll never make. I’d let my legs dangle.

I’d take a short walk at dusk and let the March air that doesn’t feel like the usual March air cool me off. I’d take my time if it starts to rain.

And when he wakes up, or comes home, or notices my slight absence, I’d smile and sneak back inside of us, and read to him Jack Gilbert.

I thought La Sardinas only have different styles, not functionality. It’s quite good! I like its results better than the Olympus XA2’s, and it’s really light and toy-like, making it super easy to use. A good film P&S to start with, in my opinion. Good luck!

Make sure to check the box labeled “Show a link to this page.” To place the page links right in the navigation bar (next to the home, ask, etc), go to these solutions: 1 and 2 (the second one’s for a bug the first one had, but you need to follow both).

It’s not a stupid question! :) I usually send it to a lab—pharmacies in the US usually have film developing services and they offer it cheaper than pro photo labs. In other countries, I’m sure you have photo labs in the mall or downtown. Then ask them to develop the film, no prints, but ask them to scan the negatives and put the scans inside a CD (or provide them with a flash drive). The CD costs extra but at least you don’t need to print them out and have to scan them yourself. If you do want to scan them yourself, there are lots of tutorials on Google without having to use a film scanner. Good luck! :)

Hi! I actually just learned it from trial and error using jQuery codes I Googled. To be honest, jQuery tutorials online are quite confusing to the unfamiliar eyes; it took me a long time before I realized that they’re all expecting me to learn where this and that goes. If it helps, that kind of effect is called “SlickBox.”

Sigh. You keep making me want to do things I never thought I’d do.

You make me want to voice things out, express, stop keeping it all inside a bottle. This is supposed to be a private moment but then I realized that I don’t care. Besides, I rarely have the opportunity to showcase how proud I am to have you, so this is my moment to do that. I don’t care who gets to read.

You make me want to keep looking for better words that will suit in describing this. Lately I’ve been reading new vocabularies. The English language, I found, doesn’t seem to be adequately equipped in describing what we have. When I find it, I’ll let you know.

You make me want to go around the streets, shake strangers by the shoulders, and yell at them, “Hey, you know that big hoopla they sell about soul mates? It’s real. And the mythical-sounding ‘true love’ you read from Austen novels and hear from love songs? That’s real, too.” Nobody might believe, but I’m willing to try.

You make me want to disbelieve time. I don’t know; what is time anyway? This first month felt like a whole fucking year, a day seemed like three dates, and Skype conversations last until four in the morning (so far). We don’t usually make a big deal out of month-saries, but how could you not when this one felt like a year compressed inside thirty days?

You make me want to get out of bed in the morning. It used to be such a chore, but now I could not imagine the kind of life I had before you. I could only remember it being a pretty big black hole where I survived with Internet dependency and a zoned-out look on my face. So yes, I guess thanks is in order. Thank you for being here.

Lastly, you make me want to write extremely cheesy and lovesick-ly essays and post them publicly. People might unfollow but, again, I just don’t give a flying fuck. Here’s to the first of many. I love you.

I’d use Manual as much as possible, if I can, but yeah, I’ve just grown accustomed to Av.

I think every photographer experiences that. Don’t hold back. I just think, “These people won’t even see me again after this, why should I care?” I usually just smile at the onlookers so they’ll know I don’t care. The shyness is a two-way street. If they notice that you’re noticing them, they avoid looking.

She’s still in the Philippines; we still have some stuff to sort out before she leaves. I’m pretty flexible, which I guess made me adapt to the culture rather easier. I understand their customs but I know how I’m raised and what my values and principles are, so “adapting” doesn’t really mean changing those cores. I didn’t find it hard to communicate, as English is my second language and I grew up watching American movies and all the books I read are in English. We’re planning on settling down here, though I wouldn’t say no to an opportunity of raising my kids in the Philippines. I like the schools there better.

After crossing back to Washington, it was still pretty early so I started looking for a road to Mt. St Helens, with the sole plan that if it’s not too far off, I’d drive up. Unfortunately I took some wrong exits off the I-5 and landed at Woodland, WA, just a little past the state border. I was about to turn around and get back on the freeway when I noticed the signs for a tulip festival. And guess who’s a sucker for tulips? Haha.

So I followed the signs, as with every street corner, they’d put up some arrows to direct you to the far-off fields. Eventually I got there and it was empty, save for two old ladies shopping for seeds at the gift shop. Nobody was in the field and it was so darn quiet. I asked the shopkeeper if it was OK to walk around the show field and she said hell yeah. So basically I had the “festival” all to myself. Haha.

Not too bad for getting lost. :)

I have a job; I’m a nurse. It’s not the height of my career yet, but yeah, it pays the bills. Anyway, I think I just make it seem as though I’m traveling all over the world but really, I’m not. Driving to places is easy, and taking photos of pretty places around you is even easier. You don’t really have to go very far or spend so much. As for the places that require flying, I save up on them. My priority right now is traveling (well, actually, that’s not true anymore as I’m nearing mid-twenties and I’m already thinking of settling down, haha) and if you make something a priority, you can definitely make it happen.

Aww, thank you! I’m glad you like that tag! I always fail to update it, though I’m sure I have more of it in the blog. Anyway, I have no time to manually set the settings. I use Av (Aperture priority) most of the time so I can keep the aperture to f/1.4 (or at least control it to what I like) while letting the camera to freely figure out what shutter speed and ISO to use. That’s for most of my work.

But for almost all of my landscapes, I set it to P (Program). It’s a little like completely being auto, but not. It’s quick and the aperture is low enough (> f/3.5) to cover all landscape bases and focus sharper. Believe it or not, most of my landscape shots, especially on road trips, were taken from a moving car—a skill I’ve been able to manage throughout the years of traveling—so I need a setting that’s a sure hit. Program does that. So, yeah, I’m no professional. Most of my settings are the camera’s doing, and very rarely do I set it myself.

I’m not a “success.” Success is the absence of failure. I have failed in a lot of things, made a lot of mistakes, have a list of things I should’ve done and shouldn’t have. It’s cliché to tell you to not worry too much, but seriously, if you do, you’ll just spend most of your young life worrying. I’ve learned a long time ago to just catch what’s coming and live with it.

Hi! Yes I do. I haven’t experienced the height of winter here yet, but they say it sometimes snows in the city and sometimes it doesn’t, so it’s not as bad as east coast winter. It rains frequently, but only lightly and for prolonged periods of time. Nobody here uses an umbrella. I’ve never touched mine. Plus it’s the almost-always overcast weather you want.

In the tutorial I made, under #3, it’s the CSS part that says:

Adjust 25px accordingly. Though I must admit that I think you’ve forgotten to include this part, because it works fine in mine and no one has ever complained about the margin before.

There’s this doughnut shop in Portland called Voodoo Doughnut that’s just as plain weird as the city. They have these ridiculous flavors, which were fun even though I couldn’t stop shaking my head. (Oh, also, they sell donuts by piece, by the dozen, and by the coffin. WTF. Seriously.)

I got the Old Dirty Bastard: doughnut with chocolate frosting and topped with a hefty supply of Oreos and—my favorite—peanut butter. It was heaven.
